The 2017 UK Marblehead class championship has come to a close after 3 days of high end radio yacht racing on the legendary Fleetwood marine lake. A total of 47 entries competed in this years event after a couple of late withdrawals but again gave evidence to the strength of our International class in this country and abroad that the interest and commitment to top level radio yachting could not be stronger.
A mixture of conditions over the event from Fridays fast paced low rigs being used through to light and variable winds on days 2 and 3 provided all skippers with a true test of skill, race management and boatspeed required to place well in this world class field. To that end it was defending champion Brad Gibson who took out this years event to continue his dominant run of form in the class from a revitalised 2006 World Champion Martin Roberts, and a consistent Darin Ballington rounding out the podium.
At the front end the racing was tough with a number of skippers pushing the top 3 hard with the final podium position undecided before the final A heat.
We will have a full comprehensive report online in the coming week but for now we sign off with a very large thank you to our hosts the Fleetwood MY&PC and their large group of members and associates who chipped in to deliver yet another first rate event for our class and the sport of radio yachting.
Some great pics on the Fleetwood club website with thanks to the hard working Tim Lanigan here
